Refuting the fake news regarding pig farming

Anyone has the possibility of making up a piece of news and spread it. Because of this the networks are full of fake news. Gartner Consulting holds, in its ‘Technological Predictions for 2018’ report that in 2022 we will consume more fake than real news.

There are many hoaxes regarding the pig sector: pig farming produces many greenhouse effect gases, pork is the meat that contains more fat and it must not be included in the diet, lack of biosecurity on the farms… We want to help to tear down these hoaxes.

At ACH we work in the breeding of pigs and in the production and distribution of pork and Duroc pork processed products. Pig farming is our passion and our pride, and we want the truth about the farming sector to be known, and because of this today we want to talk about 3 initiatives that refute these myths and highlight the importance of farming by providing solid evidence.

 

Let’s talk about pork 

In the Let’s talk about pork platform we can obtain reliable and transparent information on the European pig production model, while it also tears down the myths regarding animal welfare, health, biosecurity and the sustainability of the sector.

Spain, France and Portugal have joined in this unprecedented campaign that tells all the truth about the sector. The European production model is the most demanding and has the highest quality, sustainability, traceability, food safety and animal welfare standards in the world.

The Let’s talk about pork from Europe campaign is aimed at 18 to 30-year-old people and uses the Fake or Real dynamics to provide useful and true information through the voice of all the actors implied in the production of pork in Europe.

This platform has been launched by Interporc, and the French (Inaporc) and the Portuguese (Aligrupo and Agrupalto) pig/pork sector organisations.

 

Meat the Facts 

It is always better to know both sides of the story, and it is with this aim that #MeattheFacts was created.

The livestock sector is in the spotlight of the public debate in Europe and in many other countries. A description of the sector is being given that is full of myths and stereotypes, but that is completely different from the reality lived by the farmers and the professionals on the farms. To present the reality of the sector, European Livestock Voice was created.

Through press articles, reports, interviews, videos… the version of the farming sector is explained in full detail to combat the numerous fake news about this industry.

 

Farming reality

Realidad Ganadera (Farming Reality) is a copy of the European initiative Meat the Facts for its implementation in Spain.

This initiative joins organizations that are related to the stockbreeding sector with the aim of informing about the Spanish livestock production model and to highlight the importance of its contribution to face the global challenges, offering another perspective, refuting myths, and providing solid evidence to the current debate on stockbreeding.

You can find its publications and actions quickly through the hashtag #RealidadGanadera.

 

Stockbreeding is a source of income and employment in rural areas, and it takes care of the environment and animal welfare.

Through these initiatives, we are informing the consumers of the truth and the achievements of the sector, among others we have:

  • The weight of swine on the whole of the greenhouse effect gases emissions in Spain is only 1.9%.
  • In Spain there are already pig farms supplied with renewable energies: solar thermal, photovoltaic and plants that biodigest slurry through cogeneration, this allowing to reduce the environmental impact and the methane and CO2
  • The Spanish pig sector has designed the most complete and advanced Animal Welfare Certification System: the certification seal “Certified Welfare Commitment”, promoted by The White Pig Interprofessional Association (Interprofesional del Porcino de Capa Blanca, INTERPORC).
