White meat
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture has included pork in the white meat group due to its colour and composition characteristics.
Pork is a very healthy white meat, and its lean cuts have a low calory content: 104 kcal per 100 grams of pork loin, high biological value proteins, and a moderate fat content with a high unsaturated fatty acids content.
It also contains zinc, phosphorus and potassium as its most important minerals, and it is characterised by its content in B vitamins, such as vitamins B1, B3, B6 and B12.
Benefits provided by pork
- Children and teenagers. During childhood, pork provides high biological value proteins that are needed for the growth and bone development of children. It is easily digestible and a source of vitamins B6 and B12, that help in the normal functioning of the immune system. It also provides phosphorus that contributes to the appropriate health of teeth with a limited fat contribution.
- Pregnant women. Pork is rich in vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, that contributes to the good condition of the pregnancy tissues. It is ideal for helping women to meet their nutritional requirements, because it is rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins that help to regulate the hormonal activity.
- The elderly. Thanks to its minerals, amino acids and vitamins, it helps to prevent anaemia, to maintain the muscle and bone mass, and it prevents the oxidation of cells.
